Summer Temporary Help Hiring Guidelines

Apr. 15, 2011 by Dan Pflederer

In our ongoing efforts to reduce expenses the University will continue to review all requests for the hiring of temporary help. This effort extends to the hiring of summer temporary help employees as well. We ask that you be especially diligent in analyzing the necessity, the work hours and the expense of this additional staffing.
As you consider filling your summer help needs preference should be given to current Wesleyan students so that they have the first opportunity to obtain summer jobs on campus. We ask that you consider filling summer positions in the following order of priority:

1. Current Wesleyan Students
2. Current Wesleyan nine-month or ten-month employees who are seeking additional work opportunities during the summer.
3. Dependent children of Wesleyan employees*
4. All other applicants

*Please note that dependent children or relatives of Wesleyan employees may not report to their parent or relative.
The process for hiring summer temporary help is:

1. Confirm with your fiscal manager that you have budget approval to hire any summer temporary help.

2. Complete the Summer Employment Job Posting form and submit to Vanessa Sabin in Human Resources at vsabin@wesleyan.edu.

3. Human Resources will confirm the availability of salary funds for the summer temporary help requested with your fiscal manager.

4. Once confirmation is received, the summer temporary help position will be posted on the Human Resources website and if applicable, on the summer employment section of the Financial Aid website.

5. Applicants will be advised to contact the hiring manager directly to schedule an interview to learn more about the position.

6. Once a candidate has been identified the hiring manager should notify human resources of the candidate selected so that human resources can confirm all details; after which, the hiring manager may extend the offer to the candidate. Human Resources will then remove the posting from the website(s).

7. All temporary employees must report to Human Resources within three days of the start of their assignment in order to complete the required paperwork to be employed by the University.

If you have any questions, please contact Vanessa Sabin at ext. 2229.
